Crosscountry
Congratulations to Nate, Liam, David, Devon, Layla (back row) Louie, Eva, Isla, Hunter, Delrio, James (front row) and Leo who all participated in the Taieri Schools Crosscountry event held at Outram this year. All the age groups had considerable distances to run and it was great to see all our athletes finish the course. Well done, you all strived to achieve your best.
Special congratulations to Devon who came 5th in the Year 5 Girls Taieri Schools Crosscountry and represented Taieri Beach School at the Otago Primary Schools Sports Association Crosscountry held at Kaikora Valley School. She had even further to run than she did at Outram over a more demanding course. Well done Devon.
Well done to Tori, Lily and Harry who participated in the crosscountry practices at school but were unable to attend the Taieri Crosscountry event.

Healthy Eating with Pip and Harold
Lots of food from the ground
Some of the food from the animals
A little bit of food from ingredients
Sugar, salt, fat
Sugar, salt, fat
My body doesn't want too much of that!
The Seniors learnt about eating healthy food and making heathy food choices with what we eat.
Some foods have more sugar than we expected. Some yoghurts had lots of sugar.
Cornflakes was very surprising because it does not have much sugar.
We made a menu for breakfast and lunch. We thought our first menu was healthy but it had 23.75 teaspoons of sugar. Our second menu was much better with only 7 teaspoons of sugar.
We looked at the sugar, salt and fat content in different foods. Nutrigrain and Cocopops had heaps of sugar so perhaps they are good to eat in the weekend. Weetbix and Cornflakes are good for breakfast during the week.
Layla got a scan of her body to show what it is like inside a body.
Your brain is only as big as your two fists together.
It takes 12 hours for the food to go through the intestines.
Saliva helps to soften the food so it can go down your throat easier.
Layla’s heartbeat was slow when she jogged on the spot and then her heart
started going faster when she started running and when she stopped her
heart went slower.

Road Safety with Constable Ross
We had Constable Ross talk to us about road safety. Miss Shine got into Constable Ross's car and we walked behind the car. Miss Shine did not always see us.
We learnt that drivers in cars cannot always see children when they are behind the car, so we have to be super careful. If we have to go behind a parked car, like at the supermarket, we need to watch out for reversing lights on the car, listen for the sound of the engine, and look at the driver so we can judge whether it is safe. It is much better to walk in front of a parked car so the driver can see us.

From School Garden to our Plate
We took home some vegetables from our school garden. Here are some photos of us eating our school grown produce. We will show our photos to Pip and Harold the Giraffe from The Life Education Trust when we do our Healthy Eating unit on 26th June.
My Dad made this sandwich. It had lettuce in it from our school garden. It tasted really good because it went well with the mayonnaise. Louie
Mum made a sandwich for me. She put bread out and then I put some lettuce from the school garden on it and Mum put bread on top. It tasted good. Delrio
This is my soup that Dad made from the school spinach. It tasted nice. Leo

Thank you Leo. We enjoyed learning about playing the violin.
Crystal Making with the OutReach Scientists
On Tuesday Dave the Scientist came with his
science students Jacob, Caleb, Michaela and Sian to make crystals in three
different ways with us.
First, we put nickel sulfate in cold water
and ammonium sulfate in hot water. When we put the two liquids together, blue
crystals started to form.
Then we made crystal gardens using metal
salts in water glass. We made individual ones in sample tubes and a class one
in a glass jar. You can see the photos of our amazing crystals gardens.
Finally, we had three tubes of different solutions of silica jelly and we used the dropper to put liquid carefully on the top of the solutions. The crystals will grow where the liquids meet. We need to check them to find out which solution made the crystals grow the fastest.
