Wilbur's day at school

Wilbur sent us this photo of him listening to the Letterland video. Good work for a five year old Wilbur! That will help you with your reading. He has also done some fitness and he went for a ten minute walk outside to see how many different birds he could hear singing. You are doing really well Wilbur. Mrs Keach and Mrs Penrice are really impressed. Perhaps tomorrow you could send us your learning diary.

Wilbur says a very special thank you to Maddy for reading his favourite story to him.
He has got got a learning pack just like all the children at Taieri Beach School and he will let the teachers know how he is getting on.

Otago Anniversary Day

With the Otago Anniversary Day observation tomorrow we spent time last week learning about what the Otago Anniversary was all about.

We used a map of New Zealand to identify the Otago province and read an article about the sailing ships John Wickliffe and Philip Laing arriving on Otago Harbour and anchoring at Port Chalmers on 23rd March 1848.

We also talked about the difference in life then compared to now.

Report from the Board of Trustees

The children had a fantastic year in 2019. They all made huge academic progress and are all at or above their expected level in reading, writing and mathematics.

The Board of Trustees are thrilled with their progress.

The Sports Activator

When Shea the Sports Activator came we had a busy time practising high jump, discus throwing and the obstacle course.

Tiriti o Waitangi

We studied the Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) and looked at how our school values of whakaute (respect) and kawenga (responsibility) are important to ensure the Treaty's obligations are upheld by all.

Writing with a quill

Maddy found some feathers at home and we are using them as quills to do our writing.

Signing the Treaty

We went on a feather hunt to find feathers to use as quills like the Maori chiefs used to sign the Treaty but we didn't find any. We will look at home and hopefully find some.

Treaty of Waitangi

We looked at timelines to learn about Maori and Pakeha and the Treaty of Waitangi and then wrote our own timeline.

Of particular interest to us as a school with a nature based philosophy are the research findings that interaction with nature reduces stress, improves mood, physical wellbeing and cognitive function.
