Today, we went on a nature scavenger hunt at Lake Waihola with our new friends from Outram. We saw a bridge, a railway crossing, cabbage trees, black swans, reeds, spiders web, fern birds, swallows, rocks, ducks, flowers, and fish. Even though we looked really hard we didn’t find a feather or any tuis. Perhaps we will the next time we go.

Then we had a waka race - unfortunately some of them capsized but they managed to right themselves again in the fast flowing stream. Perhaps Team NZ could use some of our technological expertise in the America's Cup!

We finished the day dropping pooh sticks off the bridge.

Indy brought her two guinea pigs to school - Brownie and Nugget. She takes great care of her guinea pigs, feeding them hay, grass, apples and kibble biscuits. She also gives them water and cleans out their cage regularly. Indy loves patting her special pets and she says they are great company.

 Learning and reading stories about local Maori history in Taieri Mouth.

We learnt that Moa bones had been discovered in a Maori settlement so there must have been a moa hunter. The children drew pictures after listening to the story of two chiefs, one from Taieri Mouth called Tuwiriroa who had a daughter named Haki Te Kura. The other chief named Tukiauau was a rival and had a son Korokiwhiti who lived on a settlement near Taieri plains. The two children of the chiefs fell in love but the young women's father disapproved.

The chief from Taieri Plains was a hunted man and learnt that his enemies had found out where he was living so he moved his people along with his son down south. While on their journey down river the young women was distraught and leapt from a rock into the water but sadly she died. Her father blamed the chief Tukiauau and his son, he pursued them and they were later killed.

All the Taieri Beach School children built their own miniature waka/canoe out of sticks and cabbage leaves They had to find dry sticks so they can float better and we stripped the cabbage leaves into very thin strips so we could weave together the little sticks and glued some areas to add extra strength.

We did a test run to see if they float before our big day when we will see which one will finish a trip down a stream and who's will be the fastest. I am pleased to say they all float well and who knows we may even have a future Americas cup boat designer !!!

Year 6 Leavers

 We are very proud of our Year 6 school leavers, Indy and Isla. We know they will leave Taieri Beach School well prepared for the next step in their schooling journey - but there is a tinge of sadness because we will miss them.

At our end of term assembly, Isla and Indy wore the Taieri Beach School korowai which represents the warmth, love and aroha we have for them. We care about you both now and in the future. We wish you well in your new schools in 2021 - it is an exciting time for you.

We are so very proud of our students' academic achievement during 2020. Each and every student has made great progress over the year as a result of the individualised teaching focused on their specific needs and interests, the valued support from their whanau, and our nature based learning philosophy which current research demonstrates has academic, social, emotion and physical benefits for children.

At Taieri Beach School, the tamariki have lots of opportunities to participate in a wide range of activities.

In 2020 we included violin with Rachel, yoga with Antje, te reo Maori with Mrs Preece, and Epic Nature Explorers with Chrissie.

The teachers were very impressed with the way the children engaged in these programmes. We had lots of fun!

 Our wonderful senior girls had the audience in fits of laughter with their Cookie Time play, then treated us to a delightful duet of the song "Count on Me."

The end of year assembly culminated in the arrival of 2 very special visitors - Santa and Santa's helper!

 The children treated us to a delightful Christmas play at our end of year assembly. I just love the look of delight and enjoyment on their faces as they performed for their whanau. 😊
