Recycling Plastics

On Friday afternoon October 27th and following our weekly visit to the School Library Jeannine spoke to the children on why it is important for everyone in our community to help reduce the use of  plastic bags and plastic containers that we all use in our daily lives.

Jeannine showed us many different varieties of plastic that are causing harm to our environment especially plastic supermarket bags which are clogging up the landfills and harming wild-life in our oceans.

Jeannine then asked questions on how we could reduce using plastic in our homes and school.
Here are some of our responses

·       recycling plastic bags
·       purchasing bags that are biodegradable
·       putting our used plastic items in rubbish bags securely so they are not blown away
·       looking for the re-usable plastic signs when we visit supermarkets, cafes and restaurants
·       encouraging the use of other materials to use such as cardboard containers to store items in

Truck Safety

On Tuesday, we were visited  by Arthur and Calum from the Dunedin Carrying Company and Constable Hugh Tait from the Police Commercial Vehicle Investigation. They came out to tell us about truck safety because we have logging trucks going past our school.

We learnt that you need to be at least 2 metres away from the truck so the truck driver can see us. Trucks can take a long time to stop especially when they have a heavy load of logs.

We all had a turn at sitting in the driver's seat and had fun pulling the wire that make the horn sound. The horn was very loud!

Thank you Arthur, Calum, and Constable Tait for teaching us about being safe around trucks.

Science Supper

At our end of term assembly Dave, Geoff and the scientists put on a variety of hands-on exciting science experiments for all our families to enjoy.

The excitement of having had their hands on fire!

An electrifying experience for David!

Seeing the world through different types of lenses.

Fun with changing colours using pH indicators.

Using methanol to make our pictures really colourful.

Mmmm! How did this happen? It was supposed to form a stalagmite on the tinfoil!

Making ice cream with liquid nitrogen. Yum!

Fun Science with Dave

Dave, the scientist from the University of Otago Chemistry OutReach came to have a fun science day with us all. We made stalagmites, changed the colour of liquids, made liquid change in 15 seconds exactly (the exact time to say a magic spell!) and used different chemicals to change the colour of flames.

The Day Wilbur Came To School

We had a special visit today from Wilbur, Hunter's baby pig. Hunter showed us how to hold Wilbur carefully and told us how to he takes care of him. Wilbur doesn't like being on his back and lets out an ear-piercing squeal to let us all know.

Thanks Janetta for bringing Wilbur to school.
