Māori Cloak
One of the names for a Māori cloak is Korowai. The Korowai is worn with respect, honour and love. We made a Korowai with Mrs Lunn. We each made two feathers with things that are special to us, on them. First we drew the feathers then we drew the things that are special to us. Next we coloured them in and after that we dyed the feathers. When they were all dry we made them into a beautiful Korowai. It was a lot of fun to make the Korowai and I think it looks really nice.

We made Matariki Stars from a circle of cardboard with evenly spaced slots around the edge. We wove different coloured wool around and through the slots to make some very beautifully patterned stars. We are very proud of our work.

Sam, the scientist, put two different liquids into one conical flask. Then she said a spell and rubbed the bottom of the flask. At the end of the spell, the two liquids mixed together and made it turn into a black liquid.
We tried to work out what was happening. We got Sam to try it with Ryker using his magic finger to see the liquids turned black. We got Sam to try it with different amounts of liquid. The liquids changed to black every time.
In the end, we decided the liquids changed because of the timing, which was ten seconds.

Aboriginal Art

When you do aboriginal art, the pictures have to be done from a bird’s eye view.
The background circles represent camp fires, camp grounds and water holes.

House for Rent

Taieri Beach School is a fabulous little school, with a low pupil to teacher ratio, a caring, friendly, inclusive culture, and an exciting nature based learning philosophy. We are located 14 minutes from Waihola and 35 minutes from Dunedin.

Are you looking for a place to rent and have primary school age children that would attend Taieri Beach School?

We have a 3 bedroomed school house located next to Taieri Beach School that may be available to rent.

Contact Gloria principal@taieribeach.school.nz or phone 03 4817890 for more information.

Kite making for Matariki

On the last day of term we made kites with Mrs Lunn. Kites were often flown at Matariki, but also at other times: They were used to work out what the gods wanted the people to do. They were a way of sending messages to people far away, both to living people who were far away and people who had died.
We used toi toi stalks and strips of paper. We used string to tie the toi toi stalks together. We used Māori patterns on the strips of paper. It was a lot of fun and we really enjoyed it.

Bunnies at School

Delrio and Ryker brought their 3 baby bunnies to school. They are super cute and fluffy. Everyone enjoyed cuddling the little bunnies. The bunnies are about 4 weeks old. The bunnies are mainly white but they all have a few brown and grey spots. I think the bunnies are very, very cute.
