Learning from nature

We saw an Australasian Harrier Hawk flying in a strong wind the other day. As we watched, a strong gust of wind blew the hawk backwards. At first the hawk beat his wings furiously trying to make headway but to no avail. Then he stopped and waited for the gust of wind to die down, before he used his wings to propel forward. When the next gust of wind came, he let the power of the wind push him backwards.  Then as the wind receded he started flapping his wings again, flying forwards.

What a great visual lesson for the children about working with nature, not against nature.

Learning in nature

Delrio spotted a small brown caterpillar on a hebe bush and was much intrigued by the house it had made out of leaves.
Great observation skills, Delrio.

Reading Outdoors

This week the children have been spending time finding special places outdoors for their silent reading time. The grounds at Taieri Beach School are perfect for outdoor reading.

A wooded area the children call Paradise was a favourite place for the children to immerse themselves in literature.

The colourful gardens out the front
of the school were another special spot for the children
to read their favourite books.

Let's not forget our special school boat High N Dry. What a perfect spot to enjoy reading.
