We saw an Australasian Harrier Hawk flying in a strong wind the
other day. As we watched, a strong gust of wind blew the hawk backwards. At
first the hawk beat his wings furiously trying to make headway but to no avail.
Then he stopped and waited for the gust of wind to die down, before he used his
wings to propel forward. When the next gust of wind came, he let the power of
the wind push him backwards. Then as the wind receded he started flapping
his wings again, flying forwards.
What a great visual lesson for the children about working with nature, not against nature.
